How to face new changes in working life?

The trend in the labor market is changing, with it, the way workers and managers work and assume the labor future that awaits us. If it used to be customary to see a person remain in the same company and even in the same position for decades, now the desire for change is growing.

Just a few years ago, keeping a job for almost a lifetime was a symbol of stability, seriousness, and professionalism. Today, in such a competitive and fast-paced world of work, being in the same place for a long time is synonymous with stagnation and little ambition.

In the past, the idea of professional success was to endure at work, which gave us more possibilities for promotion. To do this, it was necessary to adapt to the demands of the company, both in terms of the conditions of the job and the economic aspects, despite being unfair to the employee. Nowadays, workers need new challenges every day, it is no longer enough to ensure stability or a salary at the end of the month. Today, the happiness that works brings, the daily challenges and goals, and the projection of the job, are some of the aspects that make “new workers” decide to change jobs and look for something that motivates or fills them more.

So great is the change in the conception of the labor career that many companies, when hiring, ask that the labor experiences of future employees are the more varied the better. Increasingly, it is valued that the employee is a relatively restless person, who wants to discover new experiences, and the adaptability that this implies. It is not a question of continually changing jobs, nor is this what is rewarded, but it is a question of seeking the path towards a satisfactory and productive career.

Adaptation to this new way of thinking about work is not yet a 100% reality. Today, we still live together generations with very different work mentalities. Who does not know parents who advise their children to keep a job at all costs, even if it means bad conditions or unhappiness? This, for the luck of many, is changing, and the good thing is that today we know more options, we have the most open mind and we consider the option of deciding and choosing when something does not meet our expectations.

Is it advisable to change the work sector?

Another of today’s great challenges is to finish accepting that the change of sector is also an option, as valid as any other. Gone are the days of being pigeonholed into a single profession and wanting to practice it forever. The examples of people who decide to “change course” are more and more common for all of us. People who, after a while practicing the profession to which they decided to dedicate themselves in a moment of their lives, now decide to twist it and start again.
Starting over or starting from scratch, is one of the greatest fears that a person assumes when he chooses a change like that, even, many other people never decide because it slows them down.
The feeling of a new beginning is common whether we change the sector or if we do it within it.


Let’s analyze the greatest fears of change:

  • Fear of the unknown

Facing a new situation for us is one of the major factors that prevent change. What will I find? Will I be able to assume this new role or situation? The unknown makes us discover positive aspects of our hidden, and this is very gratifying.

  • Fear of making mistakes

I won’t know how to perform certain tasks, I don’t have enough experience to perform them perfectly. This is a recurrent thought when we choose a job change. We all make mistakes, we are not free of them. We have to assume it and understand that mistakes make us learn and help us to use new resources so as not to make them again.

  • Fear of failure

The king of fears. He is the great power capable of not letting us advance. Will I be making the right decision? Could this be the wrong choice and make my situation worse rather than better? Failure is also within life experiences and does not always have to be implicit in change. Transform this experience into new learning and, above all, don’t let it divert you from your goals, just choose plan B to reach them.

  • Your environment is holding you back

Our environment plays a key role in decision-making. It is common for us to doubt if someone who appreciates us recommends that we do just the opposite of what we are determined to do. Do I take the step if the people who love me the most advise me the opposite? Yes, you must take that step, there is no one inside you, your emotions and thoughts. Only you have the key to that decision and understand the reasons. If your environment sees you decided, it will support you.

A change of job implies very common fears. Think positive, overcome them and move forward, it is important to believe in yourself. If you decide to make the change, remember that it involves great courage, decision, and determination. Highly valued aspects of the world of work.
